The customary communities of Dayak Tahol of Putat, Salap, and Seruyung Village submitted documents for proposing the designation of their customary forests. The documents preparation was assisted by the SASHI Foundation in coordination with the Malinau District Forest Management Unit, from January to February 2024. The Indigenous Territory Registration Agency (Badan Registrasi Wilayah Adat – BRWA) then helped these communities to submit their proposal to the Ministry of Environment and Forestry at the Customary Forest Designation Counter, Manggala Wana Bakti Building, in Jakarta on March 2024.
On June 14, 2024, the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, IPB University, and UNHAS (University of Hasanudin) as members of the techincal verification team for customary forests, conducted a preparation meeting for Malinau Regency at the office of Punan Malinau Empowerment Observer Institute (Lembaga Pemerhati Pemberdayaan Punan Malinau – LP3M). During the meeting, they emphasized the importance of including the customary community profile data and biodiversity potential information as attachments of the customary forest proposal documents.
Afterward, on July 13, 2024, the technical verification team members from the Ministry of Agrarian Affairs and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency, conducted an extended preparation meeting of the technical verification for costmary forests at Salap Village Office, Malinau Regency. In this meeting, they emphasized the importance of additional information that needs to be attached in the customary forest proposal documents. This includes the location of the customary forest within the government administrative boundaries, its position relative to forest area statuses, the presence of forest and non-forest cover, the existence of companies, and its relationship with surrounding communities. Additionally, they suggested to including the proposed customary forest map in GIS data format, specifically as a shape file.
The SASHI Foundation will continue to support the submission process of customary forest for Dayak Tahol of Putat, Salap, and Seruyung Village, especially in preparation for the technical verification process which is scheduled will be conducted in early 2025. The SASHI Foundation will be closely working with the communities and the Malinau District Government to prepare this verification process.
On July 1, 2024, the SASHI Foundation facilitated a consultation meeting to prepare the technical verification for customary forests of Dayak Tahol customary communities of Putat, Salap, and Seruyung Village. This meeting was held at the office of Forestry Office of North Kalimantan Province. During the meeting, SASHI Foundation discussed about several key matters of data requirements needed for the technical verification process. The meeting was attended by representatives of the customary communities, the surrounding community representatives (namely the Dayak Kenyah community from the Bahau River area and the Abai community from Pulau Sapi Village), the Forestry Office of North Kalimantan Province, and the head of LP3M. During this event, the head of Dayak Tahol of Putat, Salap, and Seruyung Village submitted documents that consist of information required for the technical verification to the Forestry Office of North Kalimantan Province.
